So OpenAI’s first hardware product is finally here and it’s not what anyone expected. It’s a $230 macro pad called the Codex Micro, built with Work Louder, designed specifically for controlling Codex AI coding agents.
Quick rundown:
- 13 low-profile mechanical switches (clicky or silent, your choice)
- 6 Agent Keys that light up to show what your agents are doing (green = idle, blue = working, red = error)
- Joystick, rotary dial, touch sensor
- CNC aluminum body, pretty premium feel
- Comes with 32 extra icon keycaps with coding symbols
The catch: The Agent Keys only work with the ChatGPT desktop app. Browser version isn’t supported yet.
The drama: Apple just filed a 41 page lawsuit accusing OpenAI of stealing hardware trade secrets for their unreleased smart speaker. OpenAI says it’s nonsense. The timing is definitely something.
The price tag: $230. The Work Louder Creator Micro 2 it’s based on is $144 wired. So you’re paying about $86 extra for the OpenAI branding, the Codex integration, and the custom keycaps.
Honestly the value question is pretty straightforward. If you live in Codex all day and want to see what your agents are doing at a glance, it makes sense. But for $230 with no wireless, no hot swap, and no browser support yet it’s a tough sell compared to just grabbing the Creator Micro 2 and setting it up yourself.
